Baby critters! Summer is nesting season here in Hawaii for many marine animals, and Kailua Bay has more than its fair share of new life. Sea turtles, sea birds, reef fish, and more procreate in the summer, making these next few months a great opportunity for wildlife viewing here. There are a number of different ways you can increase your odds of seeing and learning about the young animals and appreciating the fragile ecosystems that support these animals.
The most obvious is to come out on a kayak tour with us. The marine birds that nest on the offshore islands here, wedgetail shearwaters, just laid eggs and we expect them to hatch the first week of August. If your coming to Hawaii in the fall, see if you can join us for one of our special conservation tours in which you will actively participate in a fledgling survival study.
The young birds will stay in their nests and continue to grow until November, when they fly out into the open ocean where they will spend the next four years foraging for fish.

You will also see many baby tropical reef fish in the coral while you snorkel on our tour, many of which look like mini-versions of the adults.

Sea Turtles are also known to mate and nest here in Kailua Bay. In cooperation with the scientific and conservation community, and with the help of some great volunteers, we have started a program to monitor nesting behavior the beaches in Kailua in order to learn more about them and to help protect them from harm. If you live here, or are visiting Kailua and want to help out our resident turtles, think about volunteering in this program for a day or two. All you need to do is walk the beach in the morning and look for turtle tracks.
